Bar Rescue!

You never know where you’re going to get and idea or something that sparks a positive reaction. I was watching Bar Rescue on the Spike TV last week and bam one comment made by the host Jon Taffer really resonated with me. It was nothing earth shattering and in fact it was one of those points that is so simple and obvious that we tend to overlook it.

Now if you haven’t watched show Jon Taffer is an expert how to run bars to maximize profits. He works with Bars that are in trouble and is his style is direct, not holds barred and can gets bit abrasive, but he gets results. In the episode I watched he confronted the woman who owned the bar and essentially told her that her management style was upside down. The exact phrase he used was “you spend more time working in your business rather than on your business”. She was always busy doing busy work that she should have delegated rather than developing strategies on how to grow her business. I’m as guilty as the next person but I now have sign above my desk that reads “work on your business not in your business. Every retailer I work with tends to get bogged down in busy work and should take more time thinking about how to grow their business.
